Sona Jobarteh is a world-renowned kora master, singer, multi-instrumentalist, luthier, cultural educator, public speaker and activist from West Africa. Over the past seven years she has performed to sold-out audiences in more than fifty countries, including at the Hollywood Bowl (US), Glastonbury Festival (UK), the Rainforest World Music Festival (Borneo), Festival Back2Black (Brazil), New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (US), AsiaWorld Cultures Festival (Hong Kong), and more.
Sona has a very loyal fanbase and a growing following on Instagram (31,000 followers), Twitter (5,200), Facebook (95,500) and YouTube (42+ million views). Her video for "Gambia" has 14 million+ views on YouTube.
Ms. Jobarteh is founding director of the prestigious Gambia Academy, wholly committed to a modern, African-centred education system designed to galvanise students into making major contributions to our world. She has long been an educator for many other institutions and is currently enjoying a strong, working relationship with Nelson Mandela University (South Africa) where she has recently become a professor and Berklee College of Music (Massachusetts) where programmes have been studying her music for some years.
As a speaker on social and cultural concerns and the development of holistic systems of education in particular, Sona has been invited to address the UN (Kenya); the World Bank (US); the WTO (Switzerland); UNICEF (Italy); TedX (India) and many other institutions and places of higher learning.
