Sofie Royer
ABOUT
Sofie Royer is a multidisciplinary artist with Austro-Iranian roots, trained from a young age in violin and viola at the Vienna Conservatory. After spending several years in the United States –– in that time launching the Boiler Room in Los Angeles –– she returned to Vienna in 2018 to begin her solo music career. She signed with Stones Throw in 2019.
Her debut album, Cult Survivor (2020), established a singular lo-fi pop style, marked by retro synthesizers, string arrangements, and a baroque sensibility. In 2022, Harlequin deepened this identity by introducing influences from cabaret, 1980s new wave, and soft rock. The figure of the harlequin and the history of clowning in Europe inspired the theatrical visual presentation of the album. Her latest album, Young-Girl Forever (released November 2024), painted a bold portrait of how it is to be a female artist today –– among the capitalist trappings, existential uncertainties, and constant feeling that you're out of step with society. The album saw her praised by The Guardian as "one of Europe’s most intriguing underrated pop stars, with a captivating voice and an offbeat aristocratic glamour." Through her ability to build a visual universe that is at once glamorous and relatable, scholarly and humorous, she stands today as a total artist, at the intersection of music, image, and thought.
Before the release of Young-Girl Forever, Sofie was selected as a Spotify Radar artist in GSA, leading to widespread international coverage on the platform, along with a Times Square Billboard. At the same time, she performed live/was interviewed on BBC 6 Music, France Culture / Radio France, Radio Nova, Deutschlandfunk, German national TV morning talk show ZDF’s “Morgen Magazin Cafe”, and performed a KEXP live session and a live concert with Arte at Reeperbahn Festival.
Sofie has opened for Lana del Rey at L'Olympia in Paris, Air at the Philharmonie in Paris, LCD Soundsystem, Roisin Murphy and most recently Belle & Sebastian, and has performed at festivals including SXSW, Reeperbahn, End of the Road, Bilbao BBK, Rock en Seine & lots more. She has also collaborated with artists including Toro Y Moi, Lewis OfMan, Eli Keszler, Keinemusik, &ME and Kavinsky, and has recently garnered nominations for Best Pop Album at the NYC Libera Awards, Best Production and Best Pop/Rock Artist at the Austrian Amadeus Music Awards, and she recently won an MME Award at Eurosonic Festival 2026.
Sofie will be releasing her 4th studio album later this year on Stones Throw.
