Shanghai Qiutian
ABOUT
Emerging from the vibrant metropolis of Shanghai, Shanghai Qiutian has quickly become one of the most distinctive voices in China’s independent music scene—and, little by little, a rising force in the global math rock community. Blending intricate, emotive math rock arrangements with the energy and immediacy of punk-inspired live performances, the band has earned a reputation for their electrifying shows, word-of-mouth acclaim, and the nickname “the Zero Bad Review Band.”
Formed in 2018, the group currently consists of Wang Yi on vocals and guitar, Lu Feiyan on drums, Hugejimo on bass, Solo on guitar and Winnie on keyboards. From the beginning, Shanghai Qiutian has operated independently writing, managing, and touring on their own terms pushing the boundaries of what it means to be a DIY band in China’s modern rock landscape.
Their debut full-length album, Home:Revolution (2022, Wild Records), recorded across studios in Wuhan and Shanghai, Co-Produced by the Taiwanese band Elephant Gym and mixed by the guitar player of Japanese band Toe Takaaki Mino, showcased the band’s dynamic musicianship and cross-cultural creativity. The release was followed by a national tour and experimental theatre performances that combined rock, strings, and modern dance.
Their follow-up projects, including Black Flag, continued to expand their sonic identity and lyrical scope. Shanghai Qiutian has brought their intense, emotional live energy to audiences across China, Japan, Korea, the UK, and Europe, and in 2025, they embarked on their largest tour yet— over 40 shows in two months across Asia, including stops in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Their acclaimed stage presence earned them the Midi Award for Best Chinese Rock Concert, as well as recognition from CareForMusic for “Excellent Album” and “Excellent Song.”
Whether performing in packed clubs, theaters, or international festivals, Shanghai Qiutian continues to embody the independent spirit of modern Chinese rock restless, emotional, and endlessly evolving.
