ABOUT

Chunyin is the techno alias of celebrated pop musician and interdisciplinary artist, Rainbow Chan. What started as a series of experimental studies in the summer of 2013, Chunyin has grown to develop a strong voice of its own. Fitting under “deconstructed club music”, Chunyin crafts abstracted electronic forms, punctuated by jacking rhythms and unrelenting layers of signal degradation.

Chunyin’s debut EP “Code Switch” (2016) was released on Off Out Records, label of UK producer Braiden. With a nod to minimal wave and post-punk, the record is littered with warped organic sounds and samples of Hong Kong new wave cinema. Chunyin’s second EP “Pseudo Promitto” (2018) was released on Air Max 97’s delectable experimental label, DECISIONS. Toying with footwork inspired jingles, speech-to-text technologies and social media notifications, the four bristling club tracks on “Pseudo Promitto” explore our oversaturated consumer culture and pirated artistic forms.

Chunyin has performed at the Sydney Biennale, Essential Tremors Festival, HKCR, Zhao Dai (Beijing) and has supported Lolina (Inga Copeland, Hype Williams), Lotic and Zora Jones. Her performances are dynamic and shape-shifting, presented as hybrid DJ sets, performance lectures, or live beat-making with loops, voice, electronics and improvisations on saxophone.

Some words about Chunyin:

With an emphasis on sound design, sonic pyrotechnics and atmosphere, this music is immersive and maximalist… It is visceral music that seeks to invade the embodied experience of the listener.

Unique and brooding techno inspired track that rolls yet feels as though it's perpetually falling apart at the seams.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s powerful shit; sounding like the kind of stuff that would echo up from the deepest euro club going into its 27th hour, hellish and determined.
